PPP: Dominic Kesterton

We had a visit a few weeks ago from industry creative Dominic Kesterton who has already got a thriving career despite only being in the industry a few years.
*some notes from the talk*

Dominic likes to create universes, he talked about creating a world for his work to exist in rather than creating a practice. He has always been very interested in encyclopaedia.

At the moment he is working on creating a world based around seaweed pickers (as a form of currency??).
He likes to create a culture around his world. He get's into costume sometimes to try and understand what those characters would do/think/smell etc in that world.
His biggest tip was to keep making things, the people will come once you start making stuff consistently. He got picked up by No Brow Press and it just went upwards from there.
He likes creating worlds without languages because then it becomes universal, everyone can identify with something if it doesn't have a language attached. It becomes easily digestible, which in turn makes it popular.
Just recently he's invested in a risograph and is interested to see where that will take his work.

I really liked Dominic's visit just because it was interesting to talk to someone who had had such a commercial success by sticking to what they liked to do best without having to do too many tedious illustrating jobs. He kept his storytelling aspect at heart but adapted it to what he was being commissioned to do (he invents worlds/ cultures for all of his jobs as a side story, even if they aren't included in the actual final it helps him develop a better understanding).
He had a positive attitude which was really uplifting as I've been worried recently about finding a job and making my work after uni, after speaking to him it does feel like just persisting with making is the best way to get noticed!
