SB1: Reflective Practice: Books taken out

Books taken out this year

over this year I have taken out different books or brought ones to extend my learning, these ones are the ones that I really learned something from

AVATAR: The Last Airbender

This book really helped me understand the process of creating a successful series for tv. It shows how they transitioned first ideas to final shots but also it showed how they sketched the characters and the consideration of colour palette throughout the show and how it reflects characters. It was something I really took from. It also shows how drawing out something first before digitally colouring it helps develop the character, it shows the various failures the show had and what worked for them as artists. The importance of research is really shown throughout this book and is something I took away from.

Video Game Art by Chris Solarski

This was a book I brought after the Ian Livingstone Lecture, I really wanted to learn more about how games were creative as I think they are a form of art. This book doesn't talk excessively about programme it talks mostly about the fundamentals of creating a world and a charcater. It talks about backgrounds and how to draw different shadings. It also has diagrams of anatomy and I got a lot better at drawing people after looking at this book and being able to see how tendons and muscles affected the body and how it should be drawn. In particular, my hand drawings got much better from that book.

The Wes Anderson Collection

This book was probably the most influential I took out from the library this year. I have renewed it a fair few times (and still have it now) I will probably just buy it soon. Everytime I look at this book I take something new away from it. Wes Anderson is well known for his shots and his colour palette, both of these things have really influenced the way I have started thinking about my images. I now see accent colours all of the time when I am out and about. As well as this I think the storytelling involved in each shot is something that I've been trying to take away from this book.

Adventure Time: The Art of OOO

When Jon Boam came to visit one of the books he brought various books with him and one of the ones that I really liked and later brought myself was the art of ooo. It contains snippets from how each episode was made as well as how to draw different characters. This year I have really been trying to improve on my character design and drawing people as It was one of my weaknesses coming onto this course. The more I have looked at books the more I have wanted to improve this skill.
This book shows lots of fan art (some of which Jon did himself ) and other artists that were fun to look at. It also talks about how the programme is made which was really helpful for me to look at.
